TODAY, all day, 10:30 til 4:30, and yes, it’s just an easy train ride away from Nottingham and London (yes, there’s such a thing), we’re at States of Independence. From the organisers:

“States of Independence is a day organised in support of independent publishing, independent writing, independent thinking. This is the third year it has happened and last year 500 people came along. About seventy writers are taking part this year, and there are thirty or so bookstalls at the book fair, so don’t be surprised if there are more people this year. The day is somewhere between a conference and a book fair, somewhere between a book festival and a rather bookish village fete. You can drop in for an hour, or stay all day. The event is unticketed and all events are free. There are panels discussing horror writing, teenage fiction, poetry readings, a discussion on happiness (that will be in the biggest room), the Romans in the East Midlands, book launches, a session discussing comics (with free comics to all those attending) lesbian and gay fiction, and a lecture on power and the state. Dickens puts in an appearance and there is a discussion on the future of book publishing. Lots more.”

So there you have it. How could you stay away? Also, we will have candy. And broadsides. For free. Yes. You heard it here first.
